On the trail of a vigilante

Margaret Reilly

Mirror Man by Fiona McIntosh, Penguin RandomHouse, $37 .. .. .. .. .. A vigilante may be on the loose on the streets of London. DCI Jack Hawksworth from Scotland Yard has been called in. His police chief does not want the media on the trail. It soon emerges that this is a killer with a difference. His victims appear to be prisoners on early release having committed crimes crimes with devastating impact, which makes it difficult for the police to feel too much sympathy. However the murders are often carried out using bizarre methods and taking a person’s life knowingly is murder. Hawksworth and his experienced team have to discover the common link. They are intent on staying ahead of the vigilante, but soon realise these are not just simple revenge killings. They are too carefully planned and there appears to be a degree of inside knowledge. The third in the Jack Hawksworth series is a good standalone read, but do not get too invested in his romantic partners; it appears that they are not long livers. His lover in the second novel meets her fate in this one — perhaps a mercy killing — and along comes an intelligent, goodlooking young journo to be his next love interest. I wonder if she meets her fate in the fourth book. This is a sparse but pageturning thriller right until the final denouement and kept me guessing for the whole four hundred pages. —
